Reader's Blog: It’s in all of our best interests to start trusting women

I wish to join the pantheon of elderly men writing overblown and self-important letters to The Paper, telling women what they can and can’t do with their own bodies.

I bear bad news for Mr Denis Murphy of Kinsale, who feels that Leo Varadkar’s holding a referendum on the repeal of the Eighth Amendment during the month of May constitutes “an insult to the mother of God”. Mr Murphy feels that if the referendum is passed, it will mean “the Irish people have turned their back on God”.

It may well be that May is — as Mr Murphy contends — “the month of Mary”, but it is however named after the Greek goddess Maia, a slightly older deity than Mary. I do hope the goddess Maia doesn’t feel insulted by Mr Murphy’s concentration on one God or Goddess whilst forsaking all others.

It might be in the best interests of Mr Murphy — and indeed the rest of us — to leave imaginary beings out of our democracy, and to start trusting real women.

Repeal the Eighth.
